Shufu Miyamoto was born in 1950 in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan. His earliest training in art was an apprenticeship under Ioka Osamu, studying oil painting. In his early twenties he discovered ukiyo-e and began experimenting with lithographic printing, first focused on silkscreen. In 1981 he moved to Kyoto to take courses at Kyoto City University of the Arts, where he began to work in woodblock printing, seeking to perfect the traditional process by incorporating modern materials and techniques. He was initially heavily influenced by nature, and his style changed drastically when he was introduced to the work of the European Impressionists. His serene and romantic landscapes are often shrouded in mist and utilize bokashi, a difficult technique of color gradation, to achieve a hazy effect. He won First Prize at the Kyoto Art Festival in 1984, and in the late 80s he exhibited in America for the first time with the Asiatic Society of New York City, which led to the first of many solo shows there. Today Miyamoto’s works can be found in public and private collections around the world, such as the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Auckland Museum in New Zealand.
