Rochelle Rusen (best known as Shelley Rusen) was born in 1940 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, where she spent most of her life. She developed a passion for art in her childhood, and her family supported her as she began to explore drawing and painting. In her final year of high school she met her future husband, Aubie, and left college to get married in 1958, having three daughters with him. In 1977 she returned to the University of Manitoba to complete her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, and began pursuing her career as a visual artist. She was an active member of Site Gallery, but began to experience immune system issues in the 1980s. Following her diagnosis of cancer in 2003, Shelley continued with her art until the end, passing away on May 2nd, 2005. Her work is on permanent display at the hospital where she spent her final days, as well as at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue.
