The Seth Thomas Clock Company was founded by Seth Thomas in Plymouth Hollow, Connecticut in 1813. It was formally incorporated in 1853, twenty two years before the town changed its name to Thomaston in his honor. The company manufactured clock movements for the Self Winding Clock Company from 1886 through the early 1890s, in addition to its standard offering of longcase, mantel, wall, and table-top clocks. Seth Thomas banjo clocks, inspired by Simon Willard’s 1802 design, are iconic American timepieces produced by the company in the late 19th Century. Characterized by their distinctive banjo-shaped case, these clocks typically feature an 8-day brass movement, a painted dial with Roman numerals, and a reverse-painted glass panel in the lower section. Made primarily from mahogany or walnut, they often include brass fittings and gilded accents. Highly collectible today, these clocks are valued for their historical significance, craftsmanship, and reflection of early American industrialization. In 1926 Seth Thomas Clock Company filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for trademark protection of the Seth Thomas brand which is still active today, although the company ceased operations and went into receivership in 2009.
