Saim Caglayan was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1949. He immigrated to the United States in 1968 to study architecture. After three years his interest changed and he went on to complete his BA in Sculpture from California State University, Long Beach. He then took further graduate courses in art from California State University, Fullerton and the Art Institute of Southern California. For over twenty years he taught sculpture for Crafton Hills College and Golden West College, and recently began teaching plein air painting at Irvine Valley College, as well as offering private painting lessons in both California and Hawaii. His love of landscape painting in 1996 motivated him to create the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. His goal in creating the non-profit was to revive the tradition of the early California painters who lived and painted in and near Laguna Beach. After nearly three decades in California Saim and his wife Maggie, a psychologist, decided to move to Kaua’i in 2001 and immersed themselves in the beauty of the island life and art. In 2003, along with Pierre Bouret, Saim started the Kauai Outdoor Painters Association. He followed this in 2005 by joining with Ronaldo Macedo to form ISLANDERS, a group of painters representing the Hawaiian Islands, and in 2007 with Katalina Prince to create the Borrego Springs Plein Air Invitational. All these organizations and events promote plein air painting and benefit not for profit organizations in their respective communities. His work is on permanent display in the Orange County Museum of Art, the American Embassy in Japan, and the Anitkabir Mausoleum of Ataturk in Turkey.
