Ruane Manning was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1938. Both of his parents were artists, and his older brother Guy grew up to be a renowned Western artist who focused on Native American portraits and scenes. Ruane trained to become a commercial illustrator in his youth, working under Rudy Garcia and influenced by the wildlife painters Charles Frace and Guy Coheleach. He studied at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and worked for several years in his late teens as a freelance advertisement artist. After discovering sculpture he began to explore painting as well, and earned his first awards from the Philadelphia Art Alliance in 1965 for Best Design, as well as a Certificate of Excellence from the Art Directors Club of Philadelphia. In 1968, his first wildlife print was published, and since then he has won many accolades for original oil paintings and prints which were commissioned by the Danbury Mint, the Franklin Mint, and the Hamilton Collection. In the 1970s he first began painting maritime scenes, studying many genres and often culling elements from them to create his current vision. Early in his career Ruane traveled throughout the United States and Europe painting and sketching the countryside, particularly drawn to the emerald green hues of the Irish countryside, the homeland of his grandparents. Images from Arizona, California, and the wild lands around the Rocky Mountains became a signature feature of his work in the late 1980s, and he joined his brother for a time to paint pueblos and life on the reservations of the Midwest. His stone sculptures were included in the collections of U. S. Presidents Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, and Gerald Ford, and his paintings and prints were collected by many celebrities and corporations. Ruane currently resides on a farm in rural southern New Jersey with his family, where he continues to paint in his studio among his numerous animal friends.
