LeRoy W. Nichols (best known as Roy Nichols) was born in Plattsburgh Barracks, New York in 1928. He was the descendant of two generations of career U. S. Army officers, and the family moved frequently, first to Georgia and then throughout the South on assignment. Planning to follow in his father’s footsteps with a career in the military, Nichols attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and served two years in the U. S. Army Airborne. Using the GI Bill, Nichols enrolled at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida in 1953 and found his true calling, studying under Loran Wilford and exploring sculpture under Leslie Posey. He began teaching art at the Bradenton Art Center in 1957, giving demonstrations of his work to members of the Art League of Manatee County. Here he met schoolteacher Jossie Fox, who he married in 1959. That same year he was invited to the Florida Federation of Art’s new headquarters at the DuBarry Mansion near DeLand as a summer resident artist. Nichols taught numerous workshops at art centers all over the South, serving as Artist-in-Residence and Director of the Fontana Summer School of Artin in Fontana Dam, North Carolina, from 1966 to 1995. In 2016 he and his wife moved to Jonesborough, Tennessee to be closer to their daughter, artist Peggy Root. However, in 2017 Nichols returned to Bradenton permanently after Jossie passed away, and he continues to give evening classes in landscape painting at the Art Center of Manatee.
