Richard Amsel was born on December 4th, 1947 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. An artistic prodigy who began drawing by the age of five, he attended the Philadelphia College of Art, and his proposed poster art for the Barbra Streisand musical Hello, Dolly! was selected by 20th Century Fox for the film’s campaign after a nationwide artists’ talent search before he had even graduated. This brought him to the attention of several publishers and public relations companies in New York, as well as artists like Barry Manilow and Bette Midler who enlisted him to create cover art for their albums. He began to concentrate exclusively on album covers and posters soon after, as well as a series of magazine ads for designer Oleg Cassini. Today, Amsel’s film posters commissions from the 1970s are considered some of the most important pieces of film art in history, directly responsible for the word-of-mouth buzz that supported the popularity of works like Chinatown, The Last Picture Show, The Sting, and many more. His portrait of comedian Lily Tomlin was featured on the cover of Time Magazine and is now housed in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute. Commissioned by TV Guide in 1972 to design a cover featuring the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Amsel continued a fruitful association with the publication for the next thirteen years, producing over 40 covers that boosted viewership significantly and inspired generations of other artists. Amsel’s magazine work included countless portraits of celebrities from Johnny Carson to Nancy Reagan, as well as original portraiture like that of Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh created for the television debut of Gone with the Wind. His later illustrations were lauded for their unique and timeless mixture of realism and idealization, such as the portrait of Lucille Ball created in 1974 to honor her upon her retirement from television. As film studios changed their marketing style in the 1980s employing photographs in favor of illustrations, Amsel’s style limited him to creating work for science fiction, fantasy, and adventure films. This, ironically, led to his most famous works, as he crafted iconic posters for Flash Gordon, The Dark Crystal, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Despite his commercial success he was often critical of his own medium, lamenting that poster art would never be considered “true art.” He won the New York and Los Angeles Society of Illustrators awards, a Golden Key Award from the Hollywood Reporter, and a Grammy Award, and has been inducted into multiple Halls of Fame for his work in music, film, and illustration. Amsel’s last film poster was for Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, the third of George Miller’s apocalyptic action movies with Mel Gibson, and his final completed artwork was for an issue of TV Guide featuring several news anchors, published just three weeks before he died due to complications from AIDS on November 13th, 1985. His contributions to modern graphic design and illustration are remarkable given his tragically short but prolific life, and he was included in a panel on the AIDS Memorial Quilt in 2018, as well as being the subject of documentaries and specials since his untimely death.
