Robert W. Marble was born in 1946 in Santa Monica, California. In 1964 after graduating from high school he enrolled at the private Otis College of Art and Design, where he majored in Fine Arts. He spent several years working as an illustrator and art director for a fashion house but was unfulfilled by commercial work. He began doodling cartoons in his spare time, eventually teaching himself to create unique characters and his own storylines. In 1974 he abruptly quit his job to focus on cartooning fully, crafting a cadre of satirical anthropomorphic cartoon figures to poke fun at local politics. In 1977 he met and married his wife Marie, a tireless promoter of his work at festivals and exhibitions, and with whom he had two children. To accommodate the growing family and make a larger home studio for Robert to work in they moved to Newport Beach in 1980, where they have lived ever since. Throughout the 1980s and 90s he became particularly popular for his “Red Bird” character, which now appears in every one of his cartoons, and he began printing limited edition lithographs of his works, particularly in a unique format that stretched several feet in length at times. Today he continues to attend local art fairs and show his works in galleries throughout Southern California, drawing and painting everyday situations with a humorous slant, and his pieces are found in private collections all along the West Coast.
