- Lot Description
Robert Cleminson (fl. 1865-1905) British, Deer Family Oil on Canvas. Depicts a proud stag with a doe and a fawn standing on a windswept hillside with sweeping mountains, a crystal-clear loch, and a cloudy sky in the background. Incredibly ornate frame, too heavy for one person to lift.
Condition: Commensurate with age.

Robert Cleminson was a British artist who flourished between 1865 and 1905. Almost nothing is known of his early or later life, but he was an extremely popular painter in oils of landscapes, Highland game and sporting dog pictures, and particularly animal and dog paintings. His earlier pieces are softer, with a more Romantic flair, and his later works hew closer to Luminist and Naturalist ideals. His first exhibition was ten works with the British Institution before it was disbanded in 1867, which brought him to the attention of the Royal Academy. He continued to show with the Society of British Artists, and was represented by the Shakespeare Gallery in Pall Mall, London for over a decade. Today many of his works are found in museums and fraternal halls throughout the United Kingdom, as well as in private collections throughout North America and Europe.
