Ringo Starr (born 1940) British, Framed Record and Sleeve with Lyrics Sheet. “Early 1970” is a song that was released as the B-side of Starr’s April 1971 single “It Don’t Come Easy.” A rare example of his songwriting at the time, it was inspired by the break-up of the Beatles and documents his relationship with his three former bandmates. The lyrics to the verses comment in turn on Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison as individuals, and the likelihood of each of them making music with Starr again. In the final verse, Starr offers a self-deprecating picture of his musical abilities and expresses the hope that all four will play together in the future. On left side is record partially pulled out of the sleeve, and on the right is a print of a sheet with lyrics written across it, showing the scribbles and rewrites that Starr made during the process. Numbered 17/24 bottom left of the sheet in pencil, signed by Ringo in felt-tipped pen bottom right of sheet.

Sir Richard Starkey, known professionally as Ringo Starr, was born July 7th, 1940 in Dingle, an inner-city area of Liverpool, England. Starr was afflicted by life-threatening illnesses during childhood, with periods of prolonged hospitalization due to appendicitis, peritonitis, and tuberculosis. His father was mostly absent and his mother was overprotective, so as a teenager Starr sought escape in the UK skiffle folk music craze, co-founding his first band in 1957, the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group. Within a year, however, the craze had died out, replaced by American rock and roll. When the Beatles formed in 1960, Starr was a member of another Liverpool group, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. After achieving moderate success in the UK and Hamburg, he quit the Hurricanes when he was asked to join the Beatles in August of 1962, replacing their first drummer Pete Best. The Beatles went on to become one of the most important and bestselling musical groups of all time, setting standards and influencing generations of artists afterwards. Starr occasionally sang lead vocals with the group, usually for one song on each album, including “Yellow Submarine” and “With a Little Help from My Friends.” He also wrote and sang the Beatles songs “Don't Pass Me By” and “Octopus’s Garden,” and is credited as a co-writer of four others. In addition to the Beatles’ films, Starr has acted in numerous others, and after the Beatles disbanded in 1969 he released several successful singles including the US top-ten hit “It Don’t Come Easy” and number ones “Photograph” and “You’re Sixteen.” He achieved his first solo commercial and critical success with his 1973 album Ringo, which was a top-ten release in both the UK and the US. Starr has also featured in numerous documentaries, hosted television shows, narrated the first two series of the children’s television program Thomas & Friends, and portrayed “Mr. Conductor” during the first season of the PBS series Shining Time Station. Since 1989 he has toured with thirteen variations of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. Starr’s playing style, which emphasized feel over technical virtuosity, inspired many other drummers to reconsider their playing from a compositional perspective, elevating the drums from a mere background instrument to the “backbone” of many bands. He also influenced various modern drumming techniques, such as the matched grip, tuning the drums lower, and using muffling devices on tonal rings. In 1999 he was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame, and in 2011 a Rolling Stone poll named him the fifth-greatest drummer of all time. He was inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, first as a Beatle in 1988 and as a solo artist in 2015. He was appointed a Knight Bachelor in the 2018 New Year Honours for services to music, and received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music in 2022. As one of the last two surviving Beatles along with Paul McCartney he remains a touchstone in 20th Century culture, having won an Academy Award, seven Grammy Awards, and two Emmy Awards along with the Beatles, sharing a rare and coveted EGO status with McCartney.
