Richard E. Oxley was born in Athens, Ohio in 1915. He attended Ohio University, studying art and graduating in 1937. He enlisted when World War II broke out and wound up working on camouflage, which had a profound impact on his expressionist style. His time in Europe exposed him to a vast array of art, and he also became interested in philosophy and religion after seeing the results of battle. After returning to the United States he used the GI Bill to study at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida. When he graduated in 1949 with his BFA he spent two years in Massachusetts studying at the Cape Cod School of Art, the first outdoor school of figure painting in America. There he met George David Yater, who was Director of the Provincetown Art Association, and became close friends with him. When Yater became the executive director of the Sarasota Art Association in 1955, he asked for Oxley’s assistance since he knew the area. Oxley built a home for the two of them to share on Siesta Key, complete with their own art studio and large floor to ceiling windows which allowed them to paint coastal views at any time of day. In 1956 he met and married Cary Mulford Davis, and Yater returned to Massachusetts. Oxley became a faculty member at Ringling School of Art in 1957, teaching figure painting, collage, and sculpture, as well as organizing mural painting in the downtown area and lecturing at nearby New College in the early 1960s. He exhibited frequently with others in the artistic community, particularly alongside Hilton Leech, Robert Spring, Loren Wilford, and Jerry Farnsworth. Oxley spent several summers painting in Spain and Mallorca, with his first one man show in New York City at the Key Gallery in 1964. He left teaching in 1965 and continued to make art, although he devoted more and more of his time to philosophical studies and exploring world religion. In the 1970s he and Cary created their own company, Oxley Art, Inc., to sell lithographs of his work along with original pieces, and they sold his Siesta Key home studio to fellow artist Nike Parson. They moved further inland to the experimental Palmer Farms area, opening a new studio space that became a frequent hangout for younger artists as he offered daily classes he called “Art in the Woods.” He became a monthly speaker and contributor to the Sarasota Unitarian Universalist Church, where some of his artwork and sculpture still adorns the chapel. He and Cary divorced in 1978, dissolving their company, and the last decades of his life were divided between lecturing, making art, and spiritual enlightenment. He passed away in 2002, leaving behind a large body of work in the Sarasota community.
