Randall D Wolff was born on Long Island, New York in 1960. His family moved to a larger apartment in Greenwich Village overlooking Washington Square Park when he was ten, and he became fascinated with the Victorian, Gothic, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco architecture surrounding him. When massive demolition and reconstructions began in the early 1970s he started sneaking out to salvage pieces from the buildings, sometimes climbing up multiple stories with no rope or safety system to chip off figures, eventually creating an enormous collection in the family living room. By the mid 1970s he was researching techniques for preserving and reproducing these works, and began experimenting at home in sculpting, carving, and casting gargoyles, keystones, and much more. His terracotta and cast iron works collection eventually grew so large that he had to store it in multiple locations, with a total weight of roughly 50 tons. He began to create his own work in his 30s, with no formal training, and first started showing his work at trade shows in the Midwest in the early 2000s. In 2007 his collection and work were featured in a 2007 New York Times article entitled “Gargoyle Man.” This led to multiple other interviews and national attention, and in 2008 he was offered a scholarship by Iowa Central College in Fort Dodge. In 2009 he was invited to exhibit in the Blanden Memorial Fine Art Museum, and eventually began teaching sculpture there as well. He became involved in a massive restoration project in the early 2010s, helping to fix the Dobson Pipe Organ Builders in Lake City, but was badly burned during a fire which consumed the building in 2021. In 2024 the building was finally fully rebuilt with Wolff’s help, and he continues to work on commissions and restorations throughout the Midwest.
