Pierre-Joseph Buc’hoz was born on January 27th, 1731 in Metz, France, and became a doctor of medicine in Nancy in 1763. He was primarily devoted to botany, but was also interested in the treatment of melancholy and recommended music as therapy, one of the first known modern physicians to do so. In 1773 he produced a large tome of copperplate engravings titled Histoire Universelle du Regne Vegetal ou nouveau dictionnaire Physique et economique (The Universal History of the Vegetable Kingdom), which became a primary source for many scientists, scholars, and amateur enthusiasts studying European plant life for nearly half a century. He traveled extensively throughout his native Lorraine and published a 13-volume Natural History of the province. For much of his later life he taught botany as a demonstrator at the Collège Royal des Médecins de Nancy. His most prolific output was in the 1780s, when he produced a volume on medicinal plants from China, a collection on brightly colored animals, and a dietary cookbook all within a remarkable three year period. In 1803 he created a short volume on local birds that he made the engravings for himself, and was in the process of completing his magnum opus on minerals when he passed away on January 13th, 1807 while conducting research in Paris.
