- Lot Description
Peter Motz (1934-2004) Danish, Oil on Canvas. Depicts a cluster of steers led to a great lake to drink while their handler waits impatiently nearby. The sky is a prominent feature, with bright beams of sunlight peeking through and down in the distance. Signed bottom right. Prior gallery label on back of frame.

Peter Motz was born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in 1934. As a youth he was exposed to the Old Masters and taught himself to paint to distract himself from his difficult childhood during the Nazi Occupation. Self-taught, he occasionally took courses at art schools in Denmark, Belgium, and his home country, but devoted most of his time to painting en plein air to gain experience. His fascination with the Low Countries and with pastoral artists led him to paint landscapes in oils and later acrylics that reflect the idealized, simplistic life of the farmers and shepherds of the 18th and 19th Centuries. He gave up work as a commercial artist in 1962 to pursue his creative work full time, but began to have difficulty seeing due to deteriorating health in the early 1990s. He died in 2003, and much of his work has found its way into private and public collections throughout Eastern Europe, as well as the United States and Israel.
