Paul Quentin Forster was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 19th, 1902. Forster’s family settled in San Francisco while he was a small child, and survived the 1906 Earthquake. He began his art studies around the age of eight as a protege of Harry Stuart Fonda. After studying at the California School of Fine Art from 1920 to 1924, he later taught graphic arts there and at the California College of Arts and Crafts, as well as at Stanford University. By the mid 1920s he was active in the local art scene, and during World War II he worked to create news propaganda in the Pacific Theatre. He developed an affinity for Asian art and styles, which became an important component of his work from then on. He was a member of the San Francisco Art Association, exhibiting with them regularly for many years. He passed away at his home in San Francisco on July 1st, 1991.
