Paul Leonard Newman was born on January 26th, 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio. Showing an early interest in theater, he briefly attended Ohio University in Athens before joining the United States Navy, serving in the Pacific theater in World War II. After the war he received his Bachelors in drama and economics from Kenyon College in 1949. He toured with several summer stock companies and attended the Yale School of Drama for one year before moving to New York City in 1951 to study at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg. He made his Broadway debut in Picnic in 1953 where he met Joanne Woodward, later marrying her in 1958. He was cast in his first film, The Silver Chalice, in 1954, and after a few smaller roles he landed the lead in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof opposite Elizabeth Taylor (1958). The film was a box-office smash and garnered his first Academy Award nomination. He also won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival for his appearance in The Long, Hot Summer that same year. In 1961 he starred in Robert Rossen’s The Hustler, for which he won a BAFTA Award for Best Actor and a second Oscar nomination. His third Oscar nomination came for Hud (1963), and his fourth for Cool Hand Luke (1967). He made his directorial debut with Rachel, Rachel in 1968 when his wife informed him that no one would take on the project, and it was nominated for four Academy Awards and won two Golden Globes, including Best Director. In 1969 he starred in the multi-Oscar-winning Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which led him to form First Artists Production Company with Barbra Streisand and Sidney Poitier so actors could secure properties and develop movie projects for themselves. In 1971 he participated in a television documentary that allowed him to begin pursuing his life-long passion of race car driving. He went on to win several national championships as a driver over the years, mainly in the amateur Sports Car Club of America and coming in second at Le Mans in 1979. His turn in The Sting was followed by a string of poorly received films he acted and directed in which diminished his star power by the end of the decade. However, he was nominated back to back for Academy Awards in 1981 and 1982 for Absence of Malice and The Verdict, and when he reprised his role from The Hustler for the Martin Scorsese-directed film The Color of Money he finally won the Award in 1986. In 1983 he started Newman’s Own, a food company that donated all posttax profits and royalties to charity, totalling over $700 million to date. Newman continued to found charitable organizations such as the SeriousFun Children’s Network in 1988 and the Safe Water Network in 2006. He received two more Oscar Award nominations, one in 1995 for Nobody’s Fool and the other in 2003 for Road to Perdition, his first in the Best Supporting Actor category. Also in 2003 he appeared in Our Town on Broadway, receiving a nomination for a Tony Award for Best Actor and a nomination for an Emmy Award for the televised version of it. Although he continued to provide voicework for movies, his final screen appearance was in the 2005 HBO mini-series Empire Falls, for which he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor as well as a Primetime Emmy, making him one of a small number of people to obtain half of the coveted EGOT. Citing memory loss, he announced his official retirement from film in 2007, and died at his home in Westport, Connecticut on September 26th, 2008 due to the long-term effects of lung cancer. Remembered as much for his incredible filmography as for his philanthropy and political activism, Newman is considered one of the most important figures in modern Hollywood history.
