Paul Po-Hsiu Kuo was born on July 14th, 1933 in the Akasaka area of Tokyo, Japan to Taiwanese parents. Paul was raised in Japan while his father was there studying art, eventually moving back to Taiwan in 1939. Throughout World War II studied art under his father, as well as excelling as a student and an athlete. He served in the military and attended Taiwan University where he was recognized for his achievements as a decathlete. He learned several languages and met Lin Yueh-Er, who he married in 1961 and had three sons with. Throughout the 1960s Paul became well-known in Taipei for his art exhibitions and lessons, and had his first showing in the United States on the West Coast in 1968. He and his family immigrated to the U.S. in 1971, settling in Phoenix, Arizona. He rapidly gained prestige for his watercolor work, capturing the scenery of the Southwest while employing Oriental techniques. He taught evening classes in art at Glendale Community College for over 20 years, inspiring generations of local artists. He and his wife traveled around the country and the world frequently showing his work at galleries, art fairs, and museums, but after she died in 1996 he traveled less and less. He continued to paint right up until his passing on November 8th, 2020 while participating in an exhibition in Taiwan. Today his works are in many private and public collections, highly sought after for their unique depictions and perspective of the mythos of the American West.
