Patrick Guyton was born in 1964 in Newcastle, Pennsylvania. His parents were a commercial artist and an interior designer, and by the age of 6 he was helping them with both their fields, as his father taught him the basics of sign painting. In 1984 he attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where he studied fine arts, sculpture, and design theory, and graduated with an associate’s degree in visual communications. He relocated to Southern California in 1987, first working as a fine and commercial artist creating airbrush illustration, murals, and signage. He pursued a music career as a bassist for the band Hailmary, supplementing his income by teaching fourth grade art at Vineyard Middle School in Anaheim, California. In 1997 Guyton joined Linda Jones Enterprises/Warner Bros as a background painter for the legendary cartoonist and animator Chuck Jones. During this time he studied under Maurice Noble, who had played a role in shaping the animation industry since the 1950s. He worked on a series of limited edition sports animation cels for Robert McKimson, Jr., the son of the famous Warner Bros animator, which led to new commissions by Hanna-Barbera as a background artist and cel painter. In addition to various book illustrations the artist designed thousands of Milk Caps during the POG craze for industry leader Trov Inc. In 2000 he became the lead character development artist and animation assistant for Honeytree Productions, as well as hand-painting commercial billboards and interior design murals. In the late 2000s he expanded to incorporate precious metals in his artwork, such as copper, platinum, and palladium. Since metal will normally expand and contract in different temperatures, Guyton had to develop a way to keep his paintings intact, experimenting and eventually inventing a special plastic core for his boards. He fused his experiences as an animation background artist and sign painter with ancient leafing and glazing techniques to create contemporary masterpieces often featuring birds, mysterious women, and moonlit ponds and mountains. His work can be found in Park West Gallery, the Contemporary Fine Art Gallery of Las Vegas, and in his own gallery on Laguna Beach. He also returned to music in the early 2010s, and has sung and played bass with the metal band Leatherwolf for over a decade.
