Walter Patton Cranor (best known as Pat Cranor) was born in California in 1955, and has spent almost his entire life in the state. When he won first prize in an art contest in sixth grade, he knew from then on what he wanted his career to be. After graduating from Idaho State University with a degree in Business Marketing and a minor in Art, he began a successful career as an advertising agency art director in Los Angeles. In 1986 Cranor moved to Japan, living in Osaka and Kobe for more than five years where he was introduced to the syncretic religious beliefs of shinbutsu-shūgō. This combination of Shinto and Buddhist practices extended into art as well, and inspired him to resume painting, developing his own Oriental style with watercolors and creating striking, bright, and culture-clashing scenes that were immensely popular in Japan. When his first son was born, Pat painted a series of animals in repeating patterns designed for his son’s nursery, and they eventually became his primary topic. Returning to Los Angeles, Pat started painting full-time and took his warm and humorous “animals” to the streets and into the greeting card market. His illustrated cards can be found in gallery and gift shops across the country, from the Smithsonian in Washington D. C., and the United Nations Center in New York to the San Diego Zoo and the Long Beach Aquarium, as well as many other stores and boutiques. In 2006 Pat first began exploring abstract approaches to painting along with airbrush. His new work became inspired by the four elements of nature (fire, water, earth, and wind). Pat created a multi-step process that begins with a brush painted background on wooden panels. He combines airbrushed acrylic and metallic paints with solvents and liquids in repeating layers until a finished piece of art is achieved. In recent years he has broadened his interests to include sealife and the oceans, retaining his recognizable repeating patterns that now appear in public, private, and corporate collections around the world.
