Mickey Mouse, likely the most recognizable cartoon character in the world and certainly the most recognizable Disney character, has been around since 1928. Disney watches (usually showcasing Mickey Mouse specifically) have been around almost as long, with the first one released in 1933 at the Chicago Exposition ‘Century of Progress.’ It was available both as a wristwatch and a pocket watch, with Mickey prominently displayed in the center of the dial and his arms acting as the hour and minute hands. The origin of the watches goes back to Kay Kamen, a salesman who obtained exclusive rights from Disney for their merchandise and reached out to the Ingersoll-Waterbury Watch Company. The company was famous for producing $1 watches since the late 19th Century, but the first Disney Watches went for $3.25 and were an instant hit, selling out immediately. In the 1940s Minnie, Donald, Goofy and even Pluto started to appear on the dials. The watches became iconic through promotion by the Disney company themselves, with figures like Andy Warhol, John Lennon, and Grace Kelly wearing them and Walt Disney himself gifted the 25 millionth watch produced in 1957. Mickey Mouse watches were also worn by astronauts on Apollo 7 and Apollo 10 in the 1960s. In 1971 the company, now known as Ingersoll-Timex, lost the rights to make Disney watches which was taken over by Elgin’s Bradley Watchmakers division. Lorus took over making Disney watches in 1987, and since the early 2000s a number of different brands, including Fossil and Seiko, are able to produce them. One of the most famous Disney watches made came in the 1980s when the famous Gerald Genta obtained a license to make ones in 18k gold, so popular that it led to his famous ‘Fantasy’ collection, known for its contrast of elegant, highly refined mechanical movements and playful cartoon characters on the dial.
