Olivier Mourgue was born in 1939 in Paris, France. He trained at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and began his career as a designer in the early 1960s. Mourgue became widely known for his work in furniture design, creating pieces that were both aesthetically striking and functional. His designs are characterized by their smooth, curvaceous forms and experimental use of materials, reflecting the artistic spirit of the 1960s and 1970s.
One of Mourgue's most iconic designs is the "Bouloum" Lounge Chair, which embodies his vision for the intersection of organic shapes and comfort. The chair was designed in the 1970s and is a true example of his mastery of sculptural form combined with ergonomic functionality. The Bouloum chair features soft, rounded lines and a dynamic, almost whimsical shape, with a deep, inviting seat that offers supreme comfort.
The Bouloum chair is often celebrated for its distinctive, futuristic look—an aesthetic that became particularly popular in the 1960s and 1970s, when designers were experimenting with organic shapes and novel materials. Mourgue’s use of molded plastic and foam was revolutionary at the time and allowed for the creation of visually bold yet comfortable pieces.
