Nikifor Krynicki (1895–1968) Polish, Rare Watercolor on Paper. Folk art watercolor illustration of a family at home. Signed along the back wall withing the painting. Polish title along bottom edge in original frame. The stamps found on the back are from the Nikifor Museum.
Overall Size: 12 1/2 x 9 1/4 in.
Sight Size: 11 1/4 x 7 3/4 in.Nikifor Krynicki (1895–1968), born Epifaniusz Drowniak, was a self-taught Lemko painter renowned for his naïve art. Living most of his life in Krynica-Zdrój, Poland, he began painting around 1915, using materials like paper scraps and cigarette cartons. His subjects often included self-portraits and panoramic views of Krynica's churches. Discovered in 1930 by Ukrainian artist Roman Turyn, Nikifor gained some recognition, but it wasn't until later in life that his work received broader acclaim. Despite facing hardships, including deportation during Operation Vistula in 1947, he continued to paint prolifically. Today, his extensive collection is housed in museums such as the Regional Museum of Nowy Sącz and the Nikifor Museum in Krynica.
