Nat Levy was born in San Francisco, California in 1896. While attending high school he took private art lessons with Maynard Dixon, Harold Von Schmidt, Armin Hansen, and Frank Van Sloan. He went on to study at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art, as well as the California School of Fine Arts. After service in the Navy, Levy became an aide to Milton Marks, Sr. in the California Assembly in 1917. By the 1920s, he was an expert watercolor artist with his own studio, and exhibited his works professionally from that time on. In his leisure he etched and painted seascapes and scenes of the Mendocino coast. He later worked as a graphic artist for Foster & Kleiser (billboards) and taught for many years at UC Extension in San Francisco. His paintings were included in the Thirteen Watercolorists exhibitions, and he was invited to become a member of the Society of Western Artists, elected as its president in 1955. Throughout the years he produced hundreds of illustrations, poster designs and prints. He also traveled and painted in New England, Europe and the Far East, before passing away in his hometown in 1984.
