Nancy Haynes (b. 1947) American, Ringling Project 1995. Grid artwork. The back says Nancy Haynes NH / 95-01 Ringling Project November 1995. Proceeds from this sale will benefit students at the Ringling College of Art & Design.
Size: 18 x 11 3/4 in.
#8295 .
Saying that she is excited by "the absence of decoration," Nancy Haynes creates minimalist abstract paintings with sponges using oil pigment on linen from her storefront studio in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. In her works, she achieves a phosphorescent glow-in-the-dark effect by using sulfurous greenish gray pigments.
She was born in Connecticut in a military family, and the family moved frequently. In Marin County, California, she was especially inspired by Elsie Pomeroy from whom she observed that it was okay for a woman to be an artist and to have a place of one's own called a studio.
She attended college art classes but did not graduate and arrived in New York in 1967 and was briefly an adjunct professor of painting at Hunter College and visiting artist at Harvard University and the Ringling School of Art in Florida. She lives with her sculptor-husband Michael Metz, and they have two daughters.
Her first solo show was in 1981 at the David Bellman Gallery in Toronto. A special exhibition of her work was held in Houston at the Lawing Gallery during February, 1998, and she has had many other exhibitions including the Lawing Gallery in Houston and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Harvard University. (askart)
