Mihail Mikhailovich Chemiakin (also known as Shemyakin) was born on May 4th, 1943 into a military family in Moscow, Russia. His father was a Soviet Army officer who received one of the first Orders of the Red Banner at the age of thirteen, and his mother was an actress and poet of Russian noble heritage who fought alongside him during battles in World War II. Due to their military service, most of Chemiakin’s childhood was spent traveling, especially through occupied East Germany, which exposed him to a tremendous number of art styles and philosophical ideas outside of the conventional tutelage available in the heart of the Soviet Union. He returned to Russia in 1957 to study at the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, and gained notoriety for being expelled when he denounced the popular Socialist Realism style. He became involved with the St. Petersburg Group, artists in the city who drew inspiration from all over Europe, and developed an aesthetic treatise he called Metaphysical Synthesism. He was frequently incarcerated, with his first solo art show taking place inside a psychiatric hospital he had been forced into, which garnered both critical acclaim and more controversy. He is best known for his surrealist images that call together disconnected periods, figures, tropes and conventions on a single canvas. Until 1971 he divided his time between his art and working menial labor, due to falling out of favor politically, when he was forced to flee the country after a confrontation with the KGB. Since then he has been based in Paris, France, as well as living for a time in America and other countries where his work gained new appreciation, returning to Russia multiple times since the fall of the Soviet Union. He worked as a stage designer for St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre, where his staging of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker has been showing for more than twenty years, and published two books on his art including the Musee Imaginaire, a research project that considers the history of art with unique thematic, stylistic, figurative, and iconographic perspectives, a palimpsest approach to critical art theory.
