The mid 20th Century “Bourgeois Style” arose as a direct rebuttal to the more abstract movements that began to dominate the art and culture of the Western world starting with Art Nouveau and followed by Art Deco. Although abstract art became a powerful presence and influenced generations of artisans, designers, and thinkers, a more conservative, traditional, and mass-produced aesthetic in fashion and home decor began to emerge, characterized by classic silhouettes, muted colors, quality materials, and a focus on practicality and respectability, often associated with the middle class of the era. It remains an underpinning of modern design, which allows fashion and architectural works to incorporate disparate elements like Brutalism and Minimalism into cutting edge, avant garde designs. Key elements that tend to define the movement since its beginnings are tailored suits for men with ironic placement of pockets or buttons, knee-length skirts and blouses for women that also provide hidden compartments or ease of access, and traditional furniture with minimal ornamentation in homes as well as businesses that utilize unusual or unique influences, such as aviation or symbols and concepts of Native indigenous peoples. The Bourgeois style remains, essentially, a look that prioritizes a clean, polished appearance, without being overly flashy or too bizarre, appealing to the middle and upper middle (but not mobile) class.
