Michael Godard was born on March 10th, 1963 in Southern California. His childhood was difficult and his family moved often, meaning that by the time he graduated high school he had attended sixteen different schools. From a young age he had been interested in art, and attended the University of Nevada in Las Vegas as well as the Art Center College of Pasadena. He held a wide variety of jobs, including server, pizza delivery man, and tattoo artist before becoming a part-time bartender in his last year in Pasadena. He began doodling the drinks he served on napkins, eventually including raunchy anthropomorphic fruit and olives around them, and they became his trademark after he spent months painting while keeping vigil over his daughter when she underwent surgery and eventually succumbed to brain cancer. Despite becoming one of the most recognizable artists in California in the 2000s, his work was critically maligned, criticized as commercial art and lowbrow. Nevertheless, by the early 2010s he was one of the bestselling artists in the country, nicknamed “The Rockstar of the Art World,” and participating in residencies in Las Vegas and on cruise ships and hotels around the world with his signature images adorning pinball machines and bar decorations. Today he is also heavily involved in philanthropic causes, donating significant sums to St. Jude’s, Make a Wish, Nevada Cancer Institute and The Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Foundation, as well as appearing regularly on television programs to promote art education and cancer awareness.
