Michael Arike was born in 1933 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She earned her BFA at Oklahoma State University and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois. She also studied at the School for Social Research in New York City, which became her primary site of work and source of inspiration for much of her life. She is known for her printmaking, as well as her intricate etchings and aquatints. Arike often focuses on architectural subjects, particularly iconic structures such as New York’s Grand Central Terminal. Her works are characterized by a meticulous use of color through multi-plate printing techniques, creating complex and textured images. Arike is a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists, and her many awards include the Karl A Schrag Award at the SAGA Print Exhibition, a First Prize at the 6th Annual National Small Prints Exhibition, a Gold Medal in Graphics at the Audubon Artists Annual, and The William H Leavin Prize at the National Academy of Design Annual. Her work has been included in numerous group and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally, and her work is included in the collections of the British Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the New York Public Library, the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City, Missouri, the Mississippi Museum of Art, and the Portland Museum in Oregon.
