In 1867 two different manufacturers of porcelain and earthenware were founded in Burslem, England by members of the Wade family. Wade & Myatt (later George Wade & Son) made industrial ceramics and later gained acclaim for their Wade Whimsies line. John Wade & Co (later known as Wade Heath & Co) made decorative ware, and eventually became prominent makers of Art Deco vases in the 1930s. In 1891 J & W Wade (later known as AJ Wade Ltd) was established down the street from the other two, and was known for their decorative tiles, in particular the millions they produced for the creation of the London Underground. In 1905 George Wade & Son took over rival company Henry Hallen, which had been founded in 1810 by a distant relative of the brothers. In the 1930s Colonel Sir George Wade gained control of the Wade companies that had previously been run by his father and uncles, uniting them together under the umbrella name Wade & Family and opening additional factories, particularly the large earthenware maker Wade (Ulster) Ltd in Portadown. During World War II their facilities shifted to manufacturing goods for war time, due to being further away from the damage suffered by many other companies during the Blitz. In 1958 one of the last remaining assets was assimilated into the company, which adopted the name Wade Potteries Limited and moved their headquarters to nearby Stoke-on-Trent. By then their affordably priced products include animal figures for its Collectors Club, whisky flagons, and a variety of industrial ceramics. The Wade Whimsies were by far their most popular items, small solid porcelain animal figures first conceived by Sir George Wade himself which became highly collectable in Britain and America following their retail launch in 1954. They were widely available in shops throughout the 1950s all the way into the 1980s, and experienced a massive boost in popularity when they were offered along with Red Rose Tea packages beginning in 1967. Their success led them to produce other brand names of inexpensive collectable porcelain including “TV Pets,” “Whoppas,” and “Minikins,” as well as licensed pieces based on TV shows, comic books, and Disney films. Sir George Wade died at the age of 94 in 1986, and the following year his son, the innovative designer George Anthony (Tony) Wade, succumbed to leukemia. Wade Potteries spiraled downward for the next decade, with their Irish facility renamed Seagoe Ceramic in the early 1990s and finally closed down entirely. In 1998 they were taken over by Beauford Plc, who renamed them Wade Ceramics Ltd. Beauford Plc’s pottery factories were taken over by a management buyout in 1999, becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Wade Allied Holdings Ltd. In 2009 Wade Allied Holdings invested millions in a brand new factory with the latest robotic manufacturing equipment to make ceramic flagons for the whisky industry, but the last original Wade factory in Burslem was closed in 2010 and sold for housing development. In 2022 the company entered into administration in the wake of the global economic collapse that followed the outbreak of COVID-19 and terminated all operations in December of that year.
