Lawrence Norris Scammon was born in San Francisco, California on October 26th, 1872. Scammon’s father had been the captain of a whaling vessel which came around the Horn to California in the 1850s. After graduating from the University of California at Berkeley Lawrence taught at that school at the turn of the century while working as a designer and printmaker. He studied art at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute from 1898 to 1899. Most of his sketching was done around the hills of Oakland, where he lived most of his life on Buena Vista Avenue. He taught privately and was a designer for Roberts Manufacturing Company in San Francisco. In 1926 he published a portfolio of etchings through Grabhorn Press, which depicted the first ten missions constructed in California. Scammon died in Alameda on October 12th, 1949. His work was exhibited at the San Francisco Art Association, the Commercial Club, the California Society of Etchers, and Stanford University. His etchings and paintings are in the permanent collection of the Crocker Museum.
