Large African Maasai Sculpture. Signed "NGUI." Includes removable sword and club. Arm repaired.
Size: 15 X 10 X 36 in.
#5352 .
The Maasai tribe are a Nilotic ethnic group inhabiting northern, central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, near the African Great Lakes region. They are pastoralists and have a reputation as fearsome warriors and cattle rustlers. The Maasai traditionally wear one-piece garments called kangas, and are recognizable around the world for their elaborate jewelry and customs. The circular collars or necklaces worn by women vary wildly and indicate many things, including marital status, age, and financial stability. The piercing and stretching of earlobes are common among the Maasai as with other tribes, and both men and women wear metal hoops on their stretched earlobes. This piece depicts a man, woman and child with elongated lobes, and the child is holding two removable weapons, a rungu (club) comparable to the Irish shillelagh, and an olalem (short sword), usually used for close combat or hunting lions or buffalo. The wood is likely dalbergia melanoxylon, known as African blackwood, prized for its rich color and shine after oiling that is not as dark as ebony, revealing more detail when carving.
