Katherine Houston was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1959. As a child she was highly artistic, first drawing and later working with pottery before she was even in high school. She majored in art history and fine art in college, but recalled that she could not “wrap her head around abstract expressionism.” Intending to create a satirical commentary on the form, she was appalled when her piece instead won first prize in her final semester, and she gave up art for the next twenty-five years. While traveling with her husband in England in the early 2000s they discovered a modern artist named Anne Gordon in London who was recreating 18th and 19th Century ceramic sculptures, and studied how to revive those archaic methods with her until Gordon’s death in 2007. Houston returned to America where she opened her own porcelain studio in Boston, Massachusetts. She continues to hand-craft antique-style fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other old forms with her own signature twists and additions, and routinely teaches at her studio as well as exhibiting throughout New England, with permanent exhibitions of her pieces at the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem.
