He immigrated to the United States in 1892, where he settled in New Jersey and explored the work of artists along the Jersey shore. He began to specialize in maritime paintings, influenced by realism but heavily involved with the American impressionists, and selling well enough to buy an estate in Asbury Park where he married and had several children. In the mid 1910s a doctor recommended that he winter in Florida for health reasons, and he began to divide his time between there and New Jersey, eventually purchasing a large tract of land near Miami in 1924. In his later years he was the Founder & President of the Florida Conservatory of Art and Music in Miami, and his maritime paintings were found in many galleries throughout Florida and New England. He died on May 25th, 1935, at his home in Florida.
