Modern progressive visual arts in Azerbaijan faced a delay in development right up into the 19th Century, as their traditions were rooted in the Eastern miniatures of the Middle Ages while eschewing figural work due to Muslim influences. The self-taught ornamentalist and portrait painter Mirza Kadym Irevani (1825-1875) is almost single-handedly credited with popularizing portraiture in his lifetime in what was then Qajar Iran. The next major phase of evolution in Azerbaijani figural art came in the early 20th Century with the appearance of satirical and grotesque graphics, which was considered a “low” form of art. The sharp and overwrought caricatures of government and civic leaders were able to criticize social inequality, ignorance, fanaticism, and oppression under the reign of the Russian Tsars without offending strict Muslim rules on graven images. The short-lived Azerbaijani artist Bahruz Kangarli (1892-1922) traveled to Georgia to study at the Tbilisi Art School in 1910, and brought concepts of realism back to his country while also enticing Georgian and Eastern European artists to teach in his home town of Nakhchivan. After the founding of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in 1919 the Soviet regime helped to develop several new art schools in the capital of Baku, and by the 1920s there were fine art exhibitions taking place regularly throughout the city. In the 1930s the first female artists in Azerbaijan like Maral Rahmanzade (1916-2008) began to emerge, and Post-World War II a style known as “Severe Realism” developed in direct contradiction of the prevalent Socialist Realism, which led to schisms in the Azerbaijani art world for the next four decades. In the 1990s, after the fall of the Soviet Union, there was a period of abundant growth and experimentation as new artists were able to leave the country and bring back fresh influences. By the 2010s painters, sculptors, photographers, and performance artists from the country were exhibiting all over the world from New York City to Kyoto. Azerbaijani carpet weaving, long considered a simple folk art, was elevated by its inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Today Azerbaijani artists are flourishing more than ever thanks to social media and the internet, which allows them to reach their broadest audience yet.
