Judith Yellin was born in Jerusalem in 1923. She was the granddaughter of David Yellin, one of the most important figures in the preservation of the Hebraic language in history. Her father was the architect Eliezer Yellin, who together with her mother, the musician Telma Yellin, helped develop the Rehavia neighborhood. From an early age she showed a propensity for drawing and painting, and attended the prestigious Bezalel Academy of Art from 1941 to 1943. After World War II she attended the Central School of Arts & Crafts in London from 1946 to 1949. Her mix of Impressionism and moderate Expressionism became extremely popular both abroad and in Israel, and she wound up holding numerous exhibitions in Paris, Tel-Aviv, Tokyo, and London. In 1971 she studied at the prestigious Atelier 17 in Paris, where her interest in print-making began. During her career she received many awards, including the Prize for Life Achievement at the Biennale for Modern Art in Florence, Italy in 2003. She spent most of her latter life as a teacher of arts and crafts at various colleges, including at the David Yellin Teacher’s College, her grandfather’s namesake. She passed away in Jerusalem in 2005.
