Gerard Jonas Schlouch (known as Jonas Gerard) was born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1941 to French and Brazilian parents. His youth was filled with travel and exploration, and after developing a love of art he sought out materials and became a self-taught artist. In 1955 Gerard immigrated to New York City with his mother and sister, and before he was sixteen he was successfully selling his paintings in Washington Square Park to passersby. He legally changed his name upon obtaining American citizenship, as he was tired of people calling him “Slouch.” After high school he enlisted in the United States Army in 1959, and once he was transferred to the Reserves he established his first gallery in Greenwich Village in 1963. His first wife, Judith Swart, gave him a daughter, Mira, who later became one of her father’s biggest advocates and artistic collaborators. After his divorce he and his daughter relocated to South Florida, establishing a gallery space in Fort Lauderdale and founding the Los Olas Art Festival, which he led or participated in for nearly forty years. He gained international acclaim for his spontaneous abstract expressionist style, frequently painting in front of crowds to the beat of diverse music styles in the moment and offering insight and advice to budding artists while doing so. He went through multiple periods as he continually tried to evolve his work: figurative, narrative, illustrative, abstract, and, after the turn of the century, three-dimensional. His preferred medium, time and time again, was acrylic on canvas, often used in tandem with mixed media and, later, found objects collages. In 2006, while visiting his daughter in Asheville, North Carolina, Gerard decided to move there, and opened a large gallery space in the River Arts District. A second gallery was added to Riverview Station in 2013, and both were some of the most visited galleries by locals and tourists. His final years were marred by controversy and rapidly deteriorating health, as he faced abuse allegations by former employees of his studio and received two cancer diagnoses as well as surviving a heart attack in 2019. He died at his home on September 25th, 2020, not long after the COVID-19 pandemic led to the closing of both his art spaces. Today, his protege Allen Brasington continues to promote his work, and his daughter Mira has dedicated herself to restoring his old pieces and offering his remaining works directly through her own company, Tyger Tyger Art Gallery in Asheville, although it remains indefinitely closed since the destruction wrought by Hurricane Helene.
