Jon Anderson (b. 1960) American/Balinese, Psychedelically Painted Clay Snake with Glass Eyes.
Size: 4 x 13 x 5 1/2 in.
#4271 .
Jon Stuart Anderson was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1960 into a family of artists. He was encouraged to make toys out of clay and recalls his first terracotta animal made at age 3. His parents adopted a nomadic lifestyle, and by age 12 Jon had attended 14 different public schools in several states. An outsider heavily susceptible to social stress, he always carried a sketchbook and pencil wherever he went, and found solace in reading and contemplating science, art, and history. He studied art in college, but his love of animals compelled him to seek his masters in Botany from Stephen F. Austin State University. His parent’s wanderlust influenced him as well, and after finishing his education he traveled around the world for three years, working odd jobs and seeking enlightenment through psychedelic studies and art. He closely followed the underground comix movement, and the graphic and hallucinatory illustrations of Rick Griffin. In 1989 Jon settled near Sedona, Arizona and became associated with Robert Shields, who operated several galleries in the area. Jon became a “ghost apprentice” for Robert Shields Creations, and whatever Jon made or painted was signed by Shields. Living in meager settings, Jon worked for RSC for a year, making jewelry and wood sculptures with several Mexican women. In 1990, after noticing an ad in Ornament Magazine selling Fimo beads (a brand of polymer clay), he acquired three blocks of the clay and a copy of “The New Clay” by Nan Roche. He became one of the most prolific and recognizable polymer artists in history, combining Southwestern imagery, psychedelic designs, and incredible attention to detail to make his creations, covering them in intricate millefiori-like patterns. In 1993 Shields offered Jon the opportunity to resettle in Bali, where Jon settled permanently and formed his own business signing and selling his own creations. Although he employs about 25 people and encourages them all individually as artists, he maintains his close friendship with Shields, and considers him crucial to his growth and to his discipline at his craft. He became fluent in Indonesian, and began to incorporate Hindu practices into his lifestyle, as well as their iconography into his works. In 2005 Jon was stricken with encephalitis during an art tour to Bangkok. He survived, but it left him with permanent memory, attention, and speech issues. Since the late 2010s he has been able to work less and less, although surgery on both his hands has improved the mobility in his thumbs and wrists. He surrounds himself with plant life and animals, including his two pet pigs, and has begun to focus more on collaboration with other artists, making guitars, mechanical parts, and even porcelain, always pushing himself to innovate. His charity works include the preservation and protection of reptiles, street dogs’ health and sterilization programs, and the production of affordable snakebite antivenins. He was instrumental in the procuring of medical aid from the developed world for the victims of the 2002 Bali bombings, and continually advocates for a reduction in oil usage.
