John Lewis Hart (best known as Johnny Hart) was born February 18th, 1931 in Endicott, New York. He was a creative child, and frequently doodled instead of paying attention in his classes throughout middle and high school. Hart’s first published work was in Stars and Stripes while he served in Korea as an enlisted member of the United States Air Force. Returning in 1953 he submitted many of his pieces for publication, getting his cartoons in The Saturday Evening Post, Collier’s Weekly and other magazines. While he waited for his big break he worked as a cook at a barbecue restaurant and a sign painter, crediting the people he met during these experiences with inspiring many of his later character creations. In 1957 his comic B.C. became an overnight success, appearing in national daily newspapers the following year. According to Hanna-Barbera animator Ed Benedict, the animation powerhouses approached Hart in 1960 pitching a prime time animated B.C. series, but when talks fell through the company retooled the concept without him into what eventually became The Flintstones. Hart also co-created and wrote the comic strip The Wizard of Id, drawn by Brant Parker, which began distribution in 1964. Hart had been a casual Christian in his youth, but experienced a born again moment in the mid 1980s. His increasingly aggressive stance on religion created controversy after he began making disparaging remarks about Jews, Muslims, and homosexuality in interviews, and he eventually began incorporating religious and political themes into his comics that led to his work being dropped by many newspapers in the early 2000s. Hart died of a stroke on April 7th, 2007 while at his drawing table, and his longtime partner Parker died just eight days later as well. Throughout his life he had contributed to his local community, with hundreds of drawings and logos still adorning many businesses and buildings in Broome County, New York, and he won numerous awards including the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award for B.C. in 1968 and Wizard of Id in 1984.
