John Ross Key was the grandson of Francis Scott Key, who was the author of the Star Spangled Banner. Key was a draftsman with the United States Coast Survey from 1853 to 1856, working with Gilbert Munger and James Abbot McNeill Whistler. Key worked on the East coast of the United States until he moved to San Francisco in 1869. When he was in California, he traveled extensively, painting scenes of Yosemite, Carmel, Lake Tahoe, and the Giant Squoia trees. 1873 to 1875, Key left to study art in Munich and Paris. After that, he worked in other cities, until settling in Boston where he established an art studio. Key showed over 100 works of art in 1877. His art was praised as "firm and masterly, strong and greaceful".
Key has exhibited in many places, including the National Academy of Design, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, The Boston Athenaeum, the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco, and the Society of Independent Artists.
