John Beerman was born in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1958. His mother encouraged his creativity early on, enrolling him in art classes before first grade. While at boarding school in Vermont in his early teens he discovered photography, and continued to pursue it as well as film after finishing high school, but found a key form of inspiration when he learned about the American Luminists and the Hudson River School of artists. A series of Maine landscapes by Fitz Hugh Lane (also known as Fitz Henry Lane) particularly gripped him, and he borrowed his father’s camper van to drive up to Maine to seek out the spots Lane had painted nearly a century earlier. Fascinated and inspired by finding that the scenery was virtually unchanged, he became determined to learn how to paint, and studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In 1980 he enrolled in the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, obtaining his BFA two years later. He later claimed that, because he had no innate talent for painting like so many of his fellow pupils did, he had to work infinitely harder, which ultimately led to his success. One teacher in particular, Gerry Immonen, had a profound impact on him, and encouraged his landscapes even though the style had fallen out of vogue at the time. He became a studio assistant to Cletus Johnson in Garnerville, New York right after graduating, and then worked as a studio assistant for Jasper Johns in Stony Point the following year. Johns helped arrange Beerman’s first solo exhibition at a gallery in SoHo, and while working as an assistant for Alfonso Ossorio in Wainscott in 1984 he was awarded the Yaddo Artist Colony Fellowship, allowing him to spend a year at the retreat in Saratoga Springs honing his craft. The Fellowship connected him with dozens of other artists, writers, and gallery owners in the New England and Midwestern area, and by the early 1990s he was participating in group exhibitions and holding multiple solo exhibitions each year. When the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh held an exhibition of his work in 1991 he found himself drawn back to his birthplace, and eventually returned there permanently after his first marriage ended in divorce in 2009. He met the poet Victoria Reynolds and together they settled in Hillsborough, where he began to paint the local landscapes using the Luminist techniques he had developed over the decades. Beerman is a two-time winner of the Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant (1998, 2014) and continues to exhibit and write about art, with his work on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Duke University Cancer Center, as well as in the governor’s mansions of both North Carolina and New York.
