Joel Hotchkiss, born in 1949 in Torrington, Connecticut, was raised in Sherman, a small New England town. Growing up in a creative family, he pursued a career in art, earning a BFA in Advertising Design and Communication from Pratt Institute in 1971. After working as an Art Director in Boston, he discovered his passion for kinetic art in the mid-1970s, creating mobiles in his apartment.
Seeking artistic freedom, he moved to Oakland, California, dedicating himself to mobile-making. In the early 1980s, he honed his craft at Kinetic Objects in Marin County, mastering welding and metalworking. Each week, he delivered his mobiles to Don Conard's Gallery in San Francisco, turning his passion into a sustainable career.
For over 40 years, Joel has explored the sculptural discipline of mobiles, emphasizing balance, motion, and composition. His works enhance interior and exterior spaces and are sold in galleries and museum stores nationwide, including SF MOMA and the Guggenheim Museum. Today, he works with his wife Sandra and a small team at their studio in West Stockbridge, MA. His full collection is available at www.artmobiles.com.
