Joanne Sibley (nee Brett) was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1930. Her father, Newton Brett, was a commercial artist who painted portraits and landscapes by request in his spare time, and his work influenced Sibley very much while she was young, as she first began drawing and painting during lessons with him. She attended the University of Manitoba to study interior design, where she met and married her husband, architect Jeremy Sibley, in 1954. After his firm transferred him to Jamaica the family moved there, where she worked as an artist with the Art and Publicity advertising agency that was soon absorbed into McCann Erickson. In the 1960s she was asked to paint a portrait of Jamaican national hero George William Gordon. This portrait was so popular that she began receiving numerous commissions, jump-starting her career and allowing her to focus on art full time. They moved to the Cayman Islands in 1980 while her husband was overseeing the building of the Owen Roberts International Airport Terminal and the Transnational House, both now considered historic landmarks and the subjects of many of her paintings. She began to explore watercolor painting, particularly landscapes, eventually focusing on them almost exclusively and painting en plein air. Joining the Visual Arts Society in Grand Cayman allowed her to exhibit and teach workshops regularly. After her husband retired she encouraged him to paint as well, and from the late 1990s onward both of their works appeared frequently in local museums and galleries, as well as in the collections of major corporations, hotels, and cruise ships. Sibley’s latest one woman show was in 2020, and she most recently participated in a major exhibition of Cayman artists called The People’s Collection: A 25 Year Cultural Legacy in 2022. Despite the passing of her husband in 2024 Sibley continues to paint into her nineties, capturing some of the most colorful, delicate, and richly textured views of the lush tropical paradise that is her adopted home.
