Artist Biography:
Joan Miró i Ferrà, born on April 20th, 1893, in Montroig, Catalonia, was a renowned Spanish artist who grew up in Barcelona. Initially studying business, he turned to art after a nervous breakdown and enrolled at La Llotja art academy. His first solo show in 1918 was met with ridicule, leading to depression. Inspired by Fauvism and Cubism, he moved to Paris in 1920, where his style evolved into a more personal form of Surrealism, joining the movement in 1924. He married Pilar Juncosa in 1929 and had a daughter the following year. Miró's work gained international recognition through Pierre Matisse's New York gallery. During the Spanish Civil War, his art became politically charged, and he relocated to Normandy in 1939, later escaping to Spain. Post-war, he focused on themes of women, birds, and the moon. Miró became known for his sculptures and ceramics, including a 1964 series for the Maeght Foundation and a 1974 tapestry for the World Trade Center. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Barcelona in 1979 and passed away on December 25th, 1983. His legacy in Modern art, particularly on mental illness and creativity, remains influential.
