Joan Fontaine was born Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland on October 22nd, 1917 in Tokyo, Japan to English parents. Her father was an English professor at the Imperial University and her mother was an actress who instilled in Joan and her sister, Olivia de Havilland, an early love of the theater. After their parent’s separation their mother moved them to Saratoga, California on the advice of doctors to help her recover from measles and streptococcal infection. In 1935 she made both her stage and film debut, and was quickly signed to a contract with RKO Pictures. For the next four years she was relegated to supporting roles as the studio struggled to decide what to do with her, until a chance meeting with David O. Selznick led her to be cast in the leading role in Rebecca in 1940, which garnered her first Academy Award nomination. Her collaboration with Alfred Hitchcock proved fruitful enough to earn her the lead in Suspicion in 1942 opposite Cary Grant, for which she was nominated again, this time winning the Oscar. Now considered one of the biggest female stars in Hollywood, she was nominated once again for an Academy Award in 1943 for The Constant Nymph, but began to grow tired of being typecast constantly as a weepy, melodramatic, helpless young woman. In 1946 Fontaine set up her own company, Rampart Productions, with her then-husband William Dozier. Her contract with Selznick ended in 1947 and Fontaine worked exclusively for Rampart from then on apart from one film a year for other studios. Constantly struggling to reinvent herself in unsympathetic and rugged roles, she nevertheless continued to perform well in romantic dramas, and began to appear regularly in television shows in the 50s and 60s, as well as on Broadway and in touring theatrical productions. After a fifteen year hiatus she returned to television and film in 1975, and was nominated for an Emmy Award for her role on the soap opera Ryan’s Hope in 1980. Fontaine’s last role for television was in the 1994 TV film Good King Wenceslas, after which she retired to her estate, Villa Fontana, in Carmel Highlands, California, where she spent time in her gardens and with her dogs. Having been married (and divorced) four times, and in constant rivalry with her elder sister (being the only siblings to have ever won lead acting Academy Awards) after being forbidden to use the family name by their mother, she became extremely reclusive, although she was known to a small circle of close friends as a licensed pilot, accomplished interior decorator, and Cordon Bleu-certified chef. She passed away from natural causes on December 15th, 2013 at her home in Carmel, and is honored today with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and her hand and footprints in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.
