Hasami ware is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally from Hasami, in the Nagasaki Prefecture. In 1599, when the Korean potter Yi Sam-pyeong was brought to Japan by the feudal lord Ōmura Yoshiaki after the Japanese Invasion of Korea, he instructed manufacturers in Hatanohara, Furusaraya, Yamanita and Hasami to begin the construction of climbing kilns and pottery centers. Originally produced for common people as stonewares, the shift to porcelain made Hasami ware grow more and more ornate over the next 400 years, commanding great respect and appreciation for the style. Typical Hasami porcelain uses underglaze cobalt blue and celadon, and the region produced the biggest quantity of porcelain in the country in the latter Edo period. Hasami porcelain became so ubiquitous that it actually influenced food and restaurant culture at that time. The descendents of the original manufacturers are trying to develop new techniques to produce quality daily dishes while adhering to traditions cultivated prior to the modern era.
