Janet Walker was born in Montreal, Canada in 1938. She attended Bishop’s University for two years before discovering art and shifting her focus to her newfound passion. She spent three more years at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, coming to focus on oil painting and landscapes. She met and married her husband, who owned land in the Cayman Islands, and together they moved to Grand Cayman in 1963. There she opened her own gallery and became one of the pinnacles of the artistic community, and shifted to watercolors instead to capture the light and variety of colors around her. Working “en plein air” throughout the 80s and 90s, she founded the Visual Arts Society and participated in many of its shows, receiving the Cayman National Cultural Foundation’s 1995 Creativity Award. Her work is on permanent display at the National Museum of the Cayman Islands, and has been found in numerous corporate and private collections. A series of solo exhibitions, including retrospectives and themed art installations, have been going up in the islands since the mid 2000s, with Walker considered one of the most important living artists in the island’s history.
