Jamie Hayes was born in Greencastle, Indiana on May 16th, 1951. His family moved extensively when he was growing up, and he spent much of his school years in Graz, Austria. He always had an artistic bent, and in the early 1970s he discovered a talent for carving and engraving scrimshaw. He traveled around the world collecting and selling fossil and mineral specimens, using his carving skills frequently to make ends meet. In 1977 he was visiting New Orleans with his best friend and became enamored with the city and its unique spirit. Tragically, his friend died, and Hayes settled in the French Quarter, drawing and selling whimsical characters to support himself during his grieving period. He began working for a variety of companies and galleries, teaching himself to work in numerous mediums, before finally opening his own showroom in 2003, followed by a second in 2004. In 2005 most of his work and property was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, but he continued to make art and music while spending the next two years staying with a pair of art collectors and patrons in Ranchos Palos Verdes, California. The sunny California lifestyle had a lasting effect on his work, and when he and his wife and child returned to New Orleans he opened a new gallery near St. Louis Cathedral, painting and creating in a publicly viewable space for the next decade. His whimsical style and stunning colors became recognizable and known the world over, synonymous with the exciting and eccentric nature of the city. In early 2019 he decided to close the gallery and return to traveling the world, but died unexpectedly on June 16th of that year. His son and widow continue to maintain the gallery to this day, selling original works as well as shirts and prints of his pieces.
