Jacques Deperthes was born in Suresnes, France in 1936. His experiences as a child during World War II were traumatic, and instilled a deep appreciation for order and symmetry in him, as well as a desire to escape the horrors he saw through art. He studied at the Installation Art School in Geneva, Switzerland between 1954 to 1958, and had his first solo exhibition in 1961. By the 1970s he was exhibiting in both Europe and the United States every year, and his clean, precise cityscapes and drawings were compared to the work of Miserablist and fellow Frenchmen Bernard Buffet. He often used black as the basic tone to bring out the beautiful harmony in classical composition, with rough shadowing to juxtapose against the exacting lines of the buildings. Approaching his 90s, he is still working, compelled to capture his vision and present it in honest terms, often eschewing human figures from his works to highlight both the architecture itself and the perceived alienation inherent in modern home designs. Deperthes’ artworks are in permanent displays at many museums such as Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and Les Musées d’Art et d’Histoire in Geneva, and are sought after by private collectors around the world.
