Isaac Maimon was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1951 to French-speaking parents. Maimon participated in military service and then studied at the Avni Institute of Fine Art in Tel Aviv, where he was exposed to the Paris school. During this time, he bought a pub and ran a restaurant, often observing his customers and sketching their activities, from which he would create paintings. In 1980 he began teaching at the School of Visual Arts in Be’er-Sheva and later at the Kaye Art Academy. By the late 1980s he was a Professor of Art at Ben-Gurion University in Be’er-Sheva. His work was discovered in 1989 by Talking Walls, an art publishing group in Israel, and they sponsored exhibitions for him in Israel and in New York at the International Art Exposition, with yearly solo touring shows in the United States ever since. In his work he shows much influence of the “boulevard culture” of French society and the Paris school of art including the paintings of Toulouse Lautrec, while demonstrating additional inspiration from painters Haim Kiva and Moshe Rosenthalis.
