Irvin Cowen (born 1922) American, Surrealist Still Life Oil on Panel. A baby doll rests on the snapped-off head of a hammer, with a pocket watch tied by a ribbon and a broken tile with the letter "A" on it around them. Signed bottom right. Inscriptions throughout on back.

Irvin Cowen was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1922. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago, and focused on Surrealism, incorporating hyperrealistic images juxtaposed in odd and intriguing ways. After graduating in 1961 he studied further in Mexico, and was part of the first exhibitions at the Frank Oehlschlaeger Gallery in Sarasota, Florida in 1962. Little else is known about his life, but his fascinating and absurdist pieces have become highly sought after by collectors.
